Dr. Shiela Appavoo talks to Global News about breast cancer screening guidelines.

In October 2022, the Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Clinical Practice Guidelines were updated, lowering the age at which women can begin screening for breast cancer. The Alberta Health Services update now recommends that average-risk, asymptomatic women begin screening at age 45 (instead of age 50).

If women choose to undergo screening between 40 to 44 years, a requisition is required from the referring practitioner for the first screen.

Learn more about the update as MIC radiologist Dr. Shiela Appavoo talks to Su-Ling Goh during the Health Matters segment on Global News.
