I am often asked by patients whether a prostate MRI will find cancer. The short answer is ‘yes’.
Current methods of prostate cancer screening, including the digital rectal examination, blood tests (Prostate Specific Antigen or PSA) and family history are unreliable and may miss cancer. Using our Siemens 3T MRI, the newest and most powerful MRI in northern Alberta, MIC radiologists find 90% of clinically significant cancers, while reducing the need for painful rectal biopsies for approximately 1 in 3 men.
Our 3T MR Prostate exam produces exceptional, detailed images of the prostate and surrounding tissues and does NOT require any rectal probe or coil. The test takes 30-45 minutes, can usually be booked within one week and results are made available to your physician within 24 hours.
Prostate MRI is recommended for patients with family history of prostate cancer, high PSA blood test results or abnormal physical examination. A requisition is required from your healthcare practitioner prior to arranging the exam.
